Leilah Wendell is a necromantic artist, and with that title, you not only have an interest in what is under the ground or what some would think should be under the ground, but your art will always be considered underground. I remember her legend for as long as I’ve produced and played and joined the underground… close to 30 years. I respect her strong, outspoken point of view and her undying writing career.
What is underground art?
Underground art is actually a misnomer to describe a style or genre of art that has not be fully exposed or expressed to the masses. If it were, it would no longer be “underground art”. There are SO MANY diverse art genres and arts scenes. What is “underground” to some, is mainstream to those that are immersed in it.
Are there rules or a set of ethics to the underground?
Personally, I would LIKE to believe that there are no “rules”, and that “set ethics” are higher simply because, I personally feel that those of us who do what we do, do it out of the pure love of what we create, rather than creating something to match someone’s sofa and chasing the over-inflated “art scene’s” idea of compensation.
I.E. most of us sell of wares dirt cheap, yet they take painstaking steps in creating a thing of beauty that will last forever….Rather than a white dot on a black canvas that sells for a million dollars, yet has no intrinsic emotion, spiritual or etheric value.
What is selling out?
Selling out…is doing what I mentioned above. Selling your soul, for the primary reason of chasing the dollar by creating things that match a living room, rather than a living soul. When you stop loving what you do, and still ACCEPT mediocrisy to leave your studio….you are selling out.
Can underground go above ground and still be underground?
Again, for this next question…refer to answer #1….Labels SUCK…PERIOD. In the end, just like beauty, art is in the eye of the beholder. There is really no such thing as “underground” or “above ground” art. It’s like saying that you prefer Sushi to steak. Is one “Underground” and the other “above”? No….it’s just another personal choice and individual style. It is only HUMANS that feel the need to label everything…well, SOME humans, anyway. Everything in its proper pigeon hole is just plain WRONG.
Have you ever sold out?
Have I ever sold out? I did for a short time after Katrina wiped me out…and then I threw it all in the trash because it sickened me to see how low I could go just to survive. Thankfully, I can easily get that by “working for the man: and NOT allowing what leaves my studio to reflect that somber need to “get by”.
Is it possible to steal an idea?
Yes, it is possible to steal an idea. Have had it done to me too many times to actually care anymore. BUT, one cannot “steal” the heart and soul that went into the original making/creating. So that shows in the end.
Your biggest artistic regret?
Biggest regret? Hum….I don’t think I have any actually…..And if I do, my mind at this moment doesn’t recognize any….
Your biggest artistic inspiration?
Biggest inspiration..easy…my love for the Angel of Death. That, coupled with the kinds of art I chose to expose myself to at an early age…mostly PreRapahelite and early German Romanticism and similar period art styles seemed to forge a nice marriage of theme and emotion.
What is dangerous art?
“Dangerous art”????? Artists running with scissors?!! LOL! I don’t know WHAT “dangerous art” is? Something that cuts too close to “home”? That’s been done for centuries. Art for shock value? That’s been around for a long time as well. Maybe a suicide painting a masterpiece while bleeding out with brush in hand?
I don’t think I know the meaning of this term.
Bonus question… nature or nurture?
